One-on-One (1:1)

A regular private meeting between an employee and their manager to discuss progress, feedback and growth.

A one-on-one is a recurring check-in — usually weekly or biweekly — where you and your manager talk through work, blockers, feedback and career development. It is the main channel for the kind of informal conversation an office would provide by default.

On remote teams, protecting the 1:1 is essential: without hallway chats, it is often the only dedicated space to raise concerns and stay visible. Come with an agenda to make it count.
