Individual Contributor (IC)

An employee who delivers work directly rather than managing people.

An individual contributor (IC) does the hands-on work — writing code, designing, analysing, selling — without direct reports. It contrasts with the management track, and many companies now offer a senior IC ladder so experts can grow in pay and scope without becoming managers.

Remote work suits deep IC roles especially well, since much of the work is focused and async. Knowing whether a role is IC or management tells you what the day-to-day and growth path really look like.
