What Does a Prompt Engineer Do?

Designs and evaluates the prompts and workflows that get reliable results from AI models.

A prompt engineer builds and refines how an application talks to a language model — structuring prompts, adding retrieval and tools, building evaluation sets, and reducing hallucination and cost. The job is as much rigorous testing as it is writing instructions.

It is a new but real specialisation created by generative AI, usually part of a broader AI engineering role, and it is remote-native.
